This is what a cigarette company could print about doctors and your throat in 1930 (vintage Lucky Strike ad, 1930s tobacco advertising, old cigarette ads).

What you're looking at
This is a Lucky Strike advertisement from the August 1930 issue of Golden Book magazine, put out by the American Tobacco Co. A smiling man in a white coat and a pince-nez holds up a pack of cigarettes. The red page does the selling in big type: "20,679* Physicians say "LUCKIES are less irritating"."
The rest of the ad stays on the throat. Below the pack it says "It's toasted," then "Your Throat Protection" and, on the last line, "against irritation against cough." There is no other argument on the page. The pitch is the number, the white coat and the word "physicians."
The asterisk after 20,679 points to a footnote in the lower left corner, in tiny type: "The figures quoted have been checked and certified to by LYBRAND, ROSS BROS. AND MONTGOMERY, Accountants and Auditors." The archive.org description of the item says the same thing: the number was certified by Lybrand. So the figure had a named outside checker, and that checker was a firm of accountants. The ad does not name a single physician, and it does not say who asked them or what they were asked.
Another 1930 ad in the same series, also on archive.org, says "Toasting removes dangerous irritants." Together they show the shape of the claim: a count of doctors, an auditor's stamp, and a sentence about your throat.
What makes it strange now is how little is hidden. The accountants are named in plain type, in the corner of a full page, and the headline still reads as medical advice. Slide 8 of the carousel shows the whole page with every quoted line ringed, so you can check each one yourself.
